FAQ

What is the best Assassin opener for bosses?
Grobs’ opener: cast Illusive Clone and Swift Contract, teleport behind the boss with Shadowstrike for its Critical Damage buff, use Triniel’s Dagger to cut your current cooldowns by 10%, then hold the macro. With Savage Fang at the front of the macro, even your first Insignia Explosion fires into five stacks.
Should I take the Keep 2 Insignias specialization?
It depends on your speed. Grobs keeps it, so Insignia Explosion never resets to zero stacks. Nellan97 and delcatta take +50% Multi-Hit instead, because in their testing every Explosion after the first already fired at five stacks. Nellan97 suggests switching back once your cooldowns get short enough that stacks can no longer keep up.
Savage Fang or Evasion Stance in the fourth slot?
Savage Fang for damage, Evasion Stance for safety. Savage Fang (67% of public builds) engraves five Insignias and is Grobs’ opener. Nellan97 runs Evasion Stance (32%) until Savage Fang reaches stigma level 15, and recommends it to new Assassins as a button that saves their life.
Why is my Assassin’s damage so low?
Usually positioning or buff timing. Nellan97 aims for 85–90% of his damage from back attacks, and says Assassins who hit the boss from the front or chase it on foot fall to the bottom of the party. Wasting Illusive Clone on trash, or a macro that stalls during stagger, also costs a lot of damage.
When should I use Storm Rampage?
Only while the boss is staggered, since it cannot be used otherwise. At skill level 16 every hit cuts all your cooldowns by 1 second, including Illusive Clone and Swift Contract. Grobs uses it when those buffs are on cooldown and stays on his normal rotation while they are running.
How do I stop running out of mana?
Quick Slice restores MP with every hit (20% more with its MP specialization), and Heart Gore restores 100 MP. Savage Roar is the skill that spends it. Grobs takes Savage Roar’s −20% MP cost while leveling, and Swift Contract’s level 5 specialization cuts MP costs by 20% while it is active.

What is the best Assassin PvE build right now?

The PvE Assassin on Global deals its damage with Heart Gore, Insignia Explosion, Quick Slice and Savage Roar, and saves it up for burst windows from Illusive Clone and Swift Contract. Triniel’s Dagger shortens your cooldowns and Savage Fang loads the target with Insignias. The table is the whole build at a glance; each section below explains one part.

Part While leveling Level 45 goal
Core damage Quick Slice and Savage Roar; Heart Gore and Insignia Explosion still have long cooldowns Heart Gore, Insignia Explosion and Quick Slice at 16
Stigmas Illusive Clone, Swift Contract, Triniel’s Dagger, plus a fourth Triniel’s Dagger 10, then Illusive Clone 20
Macro Insignia Explosion → Heart Gore → Savage Roar, with Quick Slice held Savage Fang added at the front
Opener — Both buffs → Shadowstrike → Triniel’s Dagger → macro
Passives Exploit Weakness, Rear Smite Add Assault Stance and Impact Hit

For the class as a whole, start from the Assassin builds hub, or compare the most-liked community builds in Best Assassin Build. To compare the Assassin with other classes, see the classes overview.

How do Insignias work in the Assassin rotation?

Build Insignias, then cash them in with Insignia Explosion. Every Insignia lasts 10 seconds and a target holds up to five. Explosion’s damage and its Stun chance rise with each stack, at 10% Stun chance per stack, doubled on NPCs. The client data lists these sources:

Source Insignias added
Savage Roar chain (Savage Roar, Savage Back Kick, Savage Smash) 1 per hit
Savage Fang (stigma) 5
Exploit Weakness clones (passive, 7% chance on a crit) 1 per clone, up to 5 clones
Ambush specialization, on a back hit 2
Heart Gore specialization 1 per hit

Grobs notes that Exploit Weakness alone engraves enough Insignias to keep Explosion fed, which is one reason it is his first passive. Savage Fang exists so that your first Explosion of a fight already hits five stacks.

Which skills should a PvE Assassin level first?

Get Heart Gore, Insignia Explosion and Quick Slice to 16. Those three unlock the specializations the build revolves around. Everything else needs less. These are the targets in Grobs’ two builds, the most-liked public Assassin skill builds on questlog.gg (46 and 27 likes):

Skill Job in the build Leveling (Grobs) Level 45 (Grobs) Other creators
Heart Gore Crit-triggered hit; resets itself at 16 12 16 Nellan97: then 20
Insignia Explosion Spends Insignias 12 16 Nellan97: then 20
Quick Slice Left-click attack; restores MP 12 16 Nellan97: then 20
Savage Roar Builds Insignias; spends MP 12 12 Nellan97: 12 is enough; delcatta: 16
Storm Rampage Stagger windows; cuts cooldowns at 16 8 16 Nellan97: rush to 16 on Global
Flash Slice Teleport to the other side 8 12 (second use) Nellan97: 12
Shadowstrike Teleport behind; +20% Critical Damage 8 8 Nellan97: 8 is enough
Infiltrate Teleport behind after a dodge 8 8 —
Defiance Breaks crowd control; heals 20% 8 12 —

Skill points only take a skill to level 10. delcatta’s build notes spell out the rest: the Daevanion boards add up to four levels, and the last two come from skill lines on rings and the Parchment Arcana. Which lines to roll on each piece is in the Assassin gear guide.

Which specializations should you pick?

Active skills unlock specialization options at levels 8, 12 and 16. These are the picks the creators agree on, with their differences noted:

  • Heart Gore: resets its cooldown on a critical hit at level 16. Grobs calls it the most important specialization in the kit. For the second slot, Grobs takes the level 8 option worth up to +20% Critical Hit, while Nellan97 and delcatta take Multi-Hit.
  • Insignia Explosion: −3s cooldown at 16, which Grobs says takes it from 10 to 7 seconds. For the second slot, Grobs keeps Keep 2 Insignias, while Nellan97 and delcatta take +50% Multi-Hit (see the FAQ for when each fits).
  • Quick Slice: always lands as a critical hit and ignores Block and Evasion at 16; Nellan97 measured about 5–10% more damage from it. Grobs and delcatta pair it with −1s Insignia Explosion cooldown on hit.
  • Savage Roar: +20% Skill Speed from everyone. Grobs takes −20% MP cost while leveling. Grobs and delcatta later take −1s Shadowstrike cooldown on hit, and Nellan97 takes up to +12% damage on fewer targets.
  • Storm Rampage: −1s to all cooldowns on hit at 16 (Grobs in his video, Nellan97, delcatta), plus Multi-Hit.
  • Shadowstrike: +20% Critical Damage Boost for 10s.
  • Infiltrate: +10m range, so it reaches 20m like Shadowstrike. Nellan97 also takes +300 Stamina on landing, because chasing the boss’s back costs a lot of dodges.
  • Flash Slice: +6m range, taking it from 4m to 10m.
  • Defiance: restores 20% HP on use.

While leveling, Grobs swaps several of these for HP-absorb options on Quick Slice, Heart Gore and Storm Rampage, which make early bosses much easier.

Which stigmas should a PvE Assassin run?

Run Illusive Clone, Swift Contract and Triniel’s Dagger, plus Savage Fang or Evasion Stance. Counting the stigmas on the skill bar in 513 public Assassin skill builds on questlog.gg, Illusive Clone appears in 96%, Swift Contract in 89%, Triniel’s Dagger in 83%, Savage Fang in 67% and Evasion Stance in 32%.

Stigma What it does (client data) Level target
Illusive Clone Removes Heart Gore’s cooldown and adds 20% of your damage as extra damage for 10s. Level 5: +10% Status Effect Chance. Level 10: +20% Critical Damage Boost. Level 15: ×1.5 Exploit Weakness. Level 20: 50% chance of extra damage on crits 20
Swift Contract +20% Combat Speed for 10s. Level 5: −20% MP cost. Level 10: ×1.5 Rear Smite. Level 15: ×1.5 Assault Stance. Level 20: +10% more Combat Speed 15, then 20
Triniel’s Dagger Heavy hit, 30% more from behind. Level 5: cast while moving. Level 10: −10% to all your cooldowns on hit 10
Savage Fang Engraves 5 Insignias on up to 4 enemies. Level 10: +50 Stagger damage. Level 15: +10% PvE Damage Boost for 10s. Level 20: always crits 15

Upgrade order. Grobs takes Triniel’s Dagger to 10 first. Its −10% applies to your current cooldowns, so using it right after your two buffs shortens both. Then he puts everything into Illusive Clone until level 20, which by his account doubles its duration to 20 seconds. Swift Contract and Savage Fang come after that. The other two creators order it differently:

  • Nellan97: Illusive Clone to 10, then Triniel’s Dagger to 10, then Illusive Clone to 15 and 20.
  • delcatta: Illusive Clone 15, Triniel’s Dagger 10 and the others at 5, then Swift Contract up to 15, Illusive Clone 20, Swift Contract 20 and finally Savage Fang 15.

delcatta lists where the stigma shards come from on Global: 200 from the Abyss Shop, 35 each from the Shugo Festa and Nightmare shops, plus Arena, Battlefield and Ascension.

How do you set up the Assassin macro?

Put your four damage skills in one skill chain and add that chain to the macro: Savage Fang → Insignia Explosion → Heart Gore → Savage Roar. The macro fires whichever is ready, in that order. Hold the macro key and Quick Slice (left click) together, so that each attack cancels the other’s animation. This is Grobs’ level 45 setup. His leveling macro is the same chain without Savage Fang.

delcatta’s build notes add a few practical details on top:

  • He puts Quick Slice in the macro as a second entry, so holding one key does both.
  • His three buffs go in their own chain on key 1, in the order Swift Contract → Illusive Clone → Triniel’s Dagger: tap it three times to fire all three.
  • He plays at 80–100 ms ping with a 10 ms macro delay and Skill Queue on, and suggests testing 20–40 ms on the dummy if casts start dropping.

Nellan97 found one trap. While a boss is staggered, Storm Rampage is always ready, and his macro got stuck firing it even when Insignia Explosion was up. His fix is to bind Insignia Explosion to a separate key as well, outside the macro line. In his one-minute dummy test, that setup gave 25–26 Explosions instead of 24.

What does the Assassin burst rotation look like?

Buff, get behind the boss, shorten your cooldowns, then hold the macro. This is Grobs’ opener:

  1. Cast Illusive Clone and Swift Contract.
  2. Shadowstrike behind the boss. It puts you in position and gives +20% Critical Damage Boost for 10 seconds.
  3. Use Triniel’s Dagger straight away, so its −10% cooldown cut lands on both buffs.
  4. Hold the macro and Quick Slice. Savage Fang fires first, so your first Insignia Explosion hits five stacks.

delcatta’s opener differs only in order: he taps his buff key three times (Swift Contract, Illusive Clone, Triniel’s Dagger), then Shadowstrikes in and holds the macro.

Grobs stresses that Season 1 does not give you enough cooldown reduction to spend these buffs freely. Hold Illusive Clone for the moments that matter, such as a boss opener: it is the class’s biggest damage window, and it starts with a long cooldown. Nellan97 adds that Combat Speed matters a lot; by his estimate, 10% more Combat Speed adds about 5% damage.

Grobs — The Only Assassin PvE Guide You Need

How do you stay behind the boss as an Assassin?

Use your teleports, not your feet. Shadowstrike (20m) and Infiltrate (20m with its specialization) both land you behind the target, and Grobs binds them to the same key so one covers the other’s cooldown. Flash Slice moves you to the other side of the boss when neither is ready. Every time you use one of these movement skills, the Ambush Stance passive also triggers.

Two settings and habits from the creators:

  • Turn on the back indicator. Grobs and delcatta both use Settings → Info Display → Combat → Display boss orientation indicator → Back, so you always see where the back is.
  • Track your back-attack share. Nellan97 aims for 85–90% of his damage from back attacks in every fight. He tells players to learn the dodge timings instead of backing off, because every step away from the boss is lost damage.

The payoff is real. Rear Smite boosts all back-attack damage (×1.5 during Swift Contract from level 10), and Ambush and Triniel’s Dagger each deal 30% more from behind.

Nellan97 — How to Deal DMG with Assassin on Global

When should an Assassin use Storm Rampage?

During stagger windows, and above all when your buffs are on cooldown. Storm Rampage can only be used on a staggered target, but you can use it over and over while the stagger lasts. At skill level 16, every hit cuts all your cooldowns by 1 second, stigmas included. Grobs uses it to bring Illusive Clone and Swift Contract back faster. While those buffs are running, he stays on his normal rotation, because otherwise Storm Rampage is a damage loss.

Nellan97 calls the level 16 Storm Rampage the main difference between Global and Taiwan builds. By his count it gives you one or two extra Illusive Clones per fight, so he levels it to 16 early. To break the Stagger gauge in the first place, these are the Assassin’s biggest contributors in the client data:

Skill Stagger Gauge damage
Savage Fang (stigma) 50, plus 50 from level 10
Triniel’s Dagger, Aerial Bind, Spiral Slice (stigmas) 20 each
Shadowstrike, Infiltrate, Shadow Fall 10 each
Insignia Explosion, Flash Slice, Ambush, Whirlwind Slice 7 each
Heart Gore 5
Savage Roar chain 2 per hit

Which passives should a PvE Assassin level?

Exploit Weakness and Rear Smite first, then Assault Stance and Impact Hit. These are Grobs’ four, and he leaves the rest at a basic level. Nellan97 agrees on the top and adds two more:

  • Exploit Weakness: Critical Hit, a chance for more Attack, and clones that engrave Insignias. Nellan97 ranks it first, because Global gear gives plenty of flat Attack but little percentage Attack. Illusive Clone at level 15 multiplies it by 1.5.
  • Rear Smite: Back Attack and PvE Damage Boost. Swift Contract at level 10 multiplies it by 1.5.
  • Assault Stance: Critical Damage Boost, which pays off once Quick Slice always crits. Swift Contract at level 15 multiplies it by 1.5.
  • Impact Hit: a little Double Chance. Grobs keeps it in his top four; Nellan97 calls it nice to have rather than a priority.
  • Ambush Stance and Determination (Nellan97): Ambush Stance triggers on every teleport, and Determination adds damage below 30% HP.

How should a PvE Assassin spend Daevanion points?

Start with skill nodes for Heart Gore, Quick Slice and Savage Roar, then the passive nodes for Exploit Weakness, Rear Smite and Assault Stance. Collect the Combat Speed and Damage Boost nodes on the way. Grobs’ early preset spends just 82 points across the first three boards to bring the core skills to 12. Node-by-node plans are in our Assassin Daevanion guide. For other classes’ builds, see the builds directory.

Where does this Assassin build come from?

We have not tested this build in-game ourselves. It is compiled from these sources and cross-checked against the skill data:

Statements about play feel, such as Quick Slice’s 5–10% gain, the Explosion counts or the value of Combat Speed, come from the creators’ own testing, not from the client data.
