FAQ

What weapon does the Templar use?
A longsword with a guard. In questlog.gg’s gear statistics for 340 public Templar character builds, the quest weapon Spiritforged Longsword is the most common (42%), followed by the crafted Splendent Ebony Dragon Lord Longsword (16%, mostly planned endgame sets) and the Enraged Kromede Sword (13%).
Is the Templar the main tank in AION 2?
Yes. Gladiator and Templar are the two tank classes, but Blazeon calls the Templar the only true tank: you lock the boss’s attention, face it away from the party and take the hits. The Gladiator plays as a damage-heavy bruiser instead. Several Templar skills raise your Enmity, and Taunt pulls the boss onto you.
Can a Templar do good damage?
Yes, and that is how most creators play it. Leonis, NoBS Game Guides and Xia all report topping the damage meter in their groups. NoBS’s own numbers show how much skill levels matter: about 12k damage per second at 1,400 item level, and about 45k at 2,100 once Judgment, Pummel, Vicious Strike and Punishment reach level 16.
What is Judgment?
The Templar’s main damage skill, and it can only be used for a short window after another skill unlocks it. Shield Smite, Warding Strike and Shield Rush unlock it for 2 seconds, and the Doom Shield stigma for 3. Its level 16 specialization removes its cooldown, so you can cast it several times in each window.
Does a Templar need Taunt?
The creators disagree. aLuckyRO takes Taunt to 15 early, because holding the boss is your job even in a damage build. Xia levels it to 20 once Noble Armor reaches 15: from level 5 it also lowers the boss’s PvE Damage Tolerance, which raises the whole party’s damage. Leonis’ offensive setups leave it out.
Is the Templar good for new players?
Mostly, yes. NoBS Game Guides says he has used the same macro since his Templar was level 4, and the core damage runs from holding two buttons. aLuckyRO gives the opposite advice for the first days: play without the macro until you know your skills, because a macro that throws you into a boss mechanic can get you killed.

What is the best Templar build in AION 2?

The standard Templar build is a damage tank built around Judgment. Its stigmas are Doom Shield, Battlefield Banner and Noble Armor, plus one of Empyrean Lord’s Punishment, Taunt or Shield of Protection depending on how much safety you want. Those are the most common stigmas in public Templar builds on questlog.gg, and the builds of Leonis, Xia and NoBS Game Guides all start from them.

Each part of the build has its own guide:

Guide What it covers
Templar PvE build Skills to push to 16, stigma setups for damage or safety, the macro, the opener and how to hold aggro
Templar Daevanion build What each of the five boards holds, and public boards from 140 to 393 points compared
Best Templar build Leonis’ most-liked builds compared, the leveling build, and what goes in the fourth stigma slot
Templar gear guide What Templars wear in every slot, the best longsword, Leonis’ gear path, gear lines and Arcana

How does the Templar deal damage?

Most of it comes from Judgment, a skill you can only use for a moment after another skill unlocks it. Xia estimates that Judgment alone deals about 60% of her damage, and NoBS Game Guides’ damage meter shows it as his top skill by a wide margin. The client data shows how the loop fits together:

  1. Shield Smite, Warding Strike and Shield Rush each unlock Judgment for 2 seconds, and the Doom Shield stigma for 3.
  2. Judgment loses its cooldown at skill level 16, so you can cast it several times inside each window. NoBS counts three casts per window.
  3. Vicious Strike, your basic attack, cuts Warding Strike’s cooldown by 2 seconds per hit from level 12, so Warding Strike, and with it Judgment, comes back every few seconds.
  4. Punishment, a charge skill, grants Executor for 20 seconds: +20% PvE Damage Boost. Pummel cuts its cooldown by 1 second per hit from level 12, which Leonis uses to keep Executor up all the time.

Annihilate adds a heavy hit on stunned or knocked-down targets, and the Doom Shield stigma resets its cooldown from stigma level 5. How the creators put this into one macro key is covered in the Templar PvE build.

How does the Templar tank?

The Templar holds aggro by dealing damage with Enmity-boosting skills, and protects the party with blocks and damage tolerance. In the client data:

  • Enmity: Vicious Strike, Pummel, Judgment and Flash Rampage all increase Enmity, and the Insulting Roar passive doubles your Enmity Boost. The Taunt stigma adds a direct pull and Shrink, which lowers the target’s Attack by 10%.
  • Warding Strike: +20% PvE Damage Tolerance for 10 seconds, plus a heal. From skill level 16 it also gives the party +10%. Leonis calls his damage setup still very tanky because Warding Strike is up almost all the time.
  • Shield of Protection (stigma): a guaranteed block. NoBS uses it like a parry, right before a big hit lands.
  • Fury (passive): every block gives you and the party +5.5% PvE Damage Boost for 20 seconds. Xia calls it the reason to bring Shield of Protection to every dungeon, because it is the only reliable way to trigger Fury.
  • Nezekan’s Shield (stigma): a shield worth 41% of Max HP on you and the party for 3 seconds, which NoBS saves for raid-wide hits.

Which stigmas do Templars slot most?

Doom Shield, Battlefield Banner and Noble Armor lead, and the fourth slot splits between three options. These shares count only the stigmas placed on the skill bar: many public builds also list stigmas they have levelled but not equipped, or none at all. On 2026-10-11, 395 of the 697 public Templar skill builds on questlog.gg had at least one stigma on the bar, and 339 of them had exactly four.

Stigma Share of 395 builds What it does
Doom Shield 83% Rushes a target with a 75% Knockdown chance, shields you and unlocks Judgment for 3s; resets Annihilate from level 5
Battlefield Banner 78% Raises your Attack in proportion to your Defense for 10s
Noble Armor 71% +Max HP for 120s; multiplies Insulting Roar (level 10) and Fury (level 15) by 1.5
Empyrean Lord’s Punishment 52% Area hit with a 50% Stun chance and 50 Stagger damage (100 from level 10)
Taunt 43% Pulls Enmity; Shrink lowers the target’s Accuracy and Attack
Shield of Protection 37% Guaranteed block with 100% more Block Damage Reduction
Executing Blade 15% Area hit that lowers Defense by 30% for 5s
Nezekan’s Shield 12% Party shield worth 41% of Max HP for 3s
Grapple 7% Pulls up to 4 enemies to you and roots them
Second Skin 5% +30% PvE Damage Tolerance for 10s
Comrade in Arms 4% Takes half the damage aimed at a party member for 6s

Assault Fury and Armor of Balance appear in 2% and 1%. On Global you equip four.

Which active skills appear in most Templar builds?

Ten actives are in more than 85% of builds, because each one either unlocks Judgment, feeds it or holds the boss. Only Flash Rampage and Defiance are optional:

Active skill Share of 395 builds
Warding Strike 97%
Punishment 97%
Vicious Strike 96%
Poach 96%
Judgment 96%
Shield Smite 96%
Shield Rush 94%
Annihilate 94%
Pummel 89%
Debilitating Smash 88%
Flash Rampage 53%
Defiance 13%

Flash Rampage only works on a staggered target, and Leonis dropped it from his setup as a damage loss. Shield Rush is in nearly every build, but Leonis and Xia both found that dodging just to use it costs damage; they use it when a dodge happens anyway.

What does every Templar skill do?

The Templar has 35 skills: 12 actives, 13 stigmas and 10 passives. The descriptions below summarize the Global client data. Damage numbers are left out because they scale with skill level, and specializations change several of these effects.

Warding Strike Hits up to 4 enemies within 5m, heals you, unlocks Judgment for 2s and grants Warding: +20% PvE Damage Tolerance for 10s.

Annihilate Hits a stunned or knocked-down target within 4m with a 30% Knockdown chance.

Is the Templar a tank or a damage dealer?

Both: a tank that holds the boss by out-damaging everyone. Leonis and NoBS Game Guides both say they top the damage meter in almost every group, and Xia titled her guide after out-damaging damage classes. None of them drops the tank tools entirely: Leonis leans on Warding Strike’s damage reduction, Xia on Taunt and Shield of Protection, and NoBS on Shield of Protection.

The creators differ on how much defense to carry. aLuckyRO argues that early Season 1 dungeons do not need defensive stigmas, as long as you take Taunt so the boss stays on you. Xia’s latest advice is the opposite for dungeons: always bring Shield of Protection, because it triggers Fury for the whole party and lets your healer relax. NoBS puts it more bluntly: you have to use Shield of Protection if you want to be called a tank.
